20th ORLEN CINERGIA WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winners of the 20th edition of the Forum of European Cinema ORLEN Cinergia have been announced! The Crystal Apple - the award for the Best Polish Debut - was granted to the Swedish film The Here After by Magnus von Horn. “We were moved by the insightful observations, the precision of the cinematic techniques and the artistic harmony,” the jury headed by Zygmunt Machwitz the decision. Outstanding cinematographer Marcin Koszałka’s directing debut The Red Spider received the Special Mention in the Best Polish Debut category. The award was granted “for the ability to create a complex world, for its intense atmosphere and moral anxiety.”

 Sworn Virgin

The Crystal Boat - awarded in the Best European Debut competition - went to Sworn Virgin by Laura Bispuri. The jury headed by Maciej Karpiński considered the film “an unusually mature debut taking up a rare topic of humanistic significance” and awarded it for “the awareness of artistic means , which were employed with subtlety and precision in order to present, with great empathy, a human drama of a distorted gender identity and the painful process of its recovery in the context of two culturally contrasting spheres of contemporary European civilization.” The Special Mention in the European Debut category was granted to Goodnight Mommy by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala for a “bold and uncompromising penetration of the dark aspects of human nature and a skillful and consistent application of genre cinema rules.”

Journey to Rome

The festival attendees also chose the winner of the Audience Award. In the Best Polish Debut category it was Walpurgis Night by Marcin Bortkiewicz, with an amazing performance by Małgorzata Zajączkowska. In the Best European Debut section the prize was granted to the comedy Journey to Rome by Tomasz Mielnik.
